Ehler 2005 Sauvignon Blanc

May 31st, 2007

Ehler 2005 Sauvignon Blanc

Very few sauvignon blancs from California find their way onto my dinner
table. Too often winemakers in the Golden State over use oak with these
wines–dulling the crispness and masking the fruit and mineral flavors. Some
say that Californian wineries should just rip out all of their sauvignon
blanc vines because they just can’t compete with the great sauvignon regions
of the world…places like Sancerre and New Zealand.

Not so with this wine. Sure, there’s a significant amount of
oak–particularly on the finish–but that’s not what you’re left remembering
about it. The nose is layered and somewhat complex with rich citrus,
tropical fruit and floral aromas mingling with just a little fig and melon.
Melon and citrus dominate the fore and mid palate here with that oak coming
on maybe a bit too strong towards the end. Medium body wrapped in a faint,
almost Sancerre-like creaminess with nice acidity and balance really brings
this wine together. If you think California can’t do sauvignon blanc, give
this one a try before you give up on the entire state.

I suggest everyone give this wine a shot. Drink it chilled and enjoy on a nice hot summer day. For $14.99 you just cannot beat this sauvignon blanc.

Bodegas San Isdiro Carril de Cotos 2004 Tempranillo

April 27th, 2007

Hey Everyone!! Just wanted to get it out there that everyone should feel free to leave comments, questions and suggestions are always welcome and helpful. The Carril de Cotos 2004 is an excellent buy for an unstanding price of $6.49. Robert Parker gave this wine 89 Points but keep on reading and check out what one of our own had to say.

-Alex Gorelik

FIrst it was merlot. Then with the popularity of the movie Sideways, came
pinot noir.

But red wine is next as the world’s most popular?

That’s hard to say, but it just might be Tempranillo. And wines like this
are the reason why.

For $10 you get a medley of aromatic red fruit on the nose–red raspberries,
red cherries and strawberries–without any pesky oak. It’s even a little
floral. Super-fruity and flavorful, those same fruits are on display on the
palate with a little meatiness and just enough skin tannins to provide a
little structure. Buy this one by the case and drink it all summer with
grilled meat, white, red or otherwise–even slow-smoked BBQ would work.

Blackjack Ranch 2005 “21″ Chardonnay

April 25th, 2007

BlackjackChardonnay isn’t a curiosity in California–it’s a juggernaut. No matter
what anyone tells you, chardonnay is just as popular today as its ever been.

Still, those who ridicule the “average” California as flabby, sweet and
heavy are certainly onto something–much of it is unless you’re willing to
pay upwards of $40 for the good stuff from the best vineyards, made by the
best winemakers–winemakers who attain great balance between fruit, oak and
acidity. But at $40+ , who can afford to drink those wines every day?

Not me…and probably not you.

That’s where Blackjack Ranch comes in with its 2005 “21″ Chardonnay. It
brings the balance, and rich flavor of those more expensive wines at a much
more affordable price.

The nose is filled with pear, lemon and vanilla with hints of minerality.Blackjack
The palate is extremely well balanced with rich, ripe fruit flavors–pear,
citrus and a little peach–excellent acidity. It’s a little creamy on the
mid-palate with vanilla and honey streaks but it’s still lively and nimble
as it finishes on a lengthy, mineral-laced note.
